4 Session Virtual Training Course | $600 / participant

All sessions are held on Zoom, 11:00 am – 1:00 pm Pacific Time

Course Description

Empathy interviews are a human-centered method to hear stories and experiences from people most impacted by systems in order to better solve problems. It is critical that team members embody the values and mindsets that are foundational to the practice as well as understand the logistics to carry them out. This course provides essential training for teams or individuals as they begin empathy interviews or seek to improve an existing practice.

Session 1: Learn the foundational elements of empathy interviews, including the mindsets, principles, practices, and how empathy interviews can support efforts to build more just and equitable systems.

Session 2: Build an empathy interview protocol that aligns with a common need in the region. Understand the logistics behind preparing for data collection, including how to ensure equitable representation and strategies for lessening the impacts of power differentials.

Session 3: Learn how to analyze empathy interview data. Reflect on how our own identities, biases, values, and experiences influence how we make meaning of what others share with us.

Session 4: Learn how to incorporate empathy interview findings into your improvement efforts and complete your interview planning.

Through this experience, participants will...

  • Become familiar with the mindsets and the tools needed to conduct interviews and then analyze data and act on findings

  • Watch and analyze empathy interview examples

  • Practice conducting empathy interviews

  • Learn and practice the conditions for successful empathy interviews, such as addressing power dynamics, creating comfort, attending to bias, and following up

  • Engage in discussion and collaboration with practitioners from across the country

  • Build a plan for conducting empathy interviews in your context

Course Format

This course will be delivered in four 2-hour interactive learning sessions conducted online in Zoom. Attend live sessions with facilitators and fellow participants; learn and practice new skills both in session and practice the skills between sessions. Participants receive electronic versions of all resources and tools.

This course is not a webinar! Together, we will create a learning space that honors everyones’ unique context and background. Our workshops prioritize connection, meaning-making, and fun!

We provide an advance draft of our slide deck before the session and enable live transcription and closed captions during the live Zoom session. Our sessions are recorded (absent any technical difficulties) and can be accessed for up to 30 days after the course concludes.

Who Should Attend:

Individuals or teams who want to try using empathy interviews as a tool for understanding the lived experience of those you aim to serve. We encourage teams to attend the training together. Teams who already have an empathy interview practice will also benefit from the detailed content.
